Rio

The most recently formed of the island’s municipalities (created by uniting Rio Elba and Rio Marina), over time this has become the favourite destination for visitors in search of shingle coves and pristine locations. Wandering along the narrow streets of the village of Rio nell'Elba or strolling across the sea-front square of Rio Marina, with its Appiani Tower, are just two of the many attractions of a holiday on the east coast. The area includes famous coves like Topinetti or the lovely Cala Seregola, with black sand, but Rio nell'Elba is also home to the island’s other mining hub, and as well as enjoying its coastline visitors should also not miss the Mining District Archaeological Museum and a guided tour of the places where the miners used to work.

Beaches

The beaches of Rio are located in the eastern part of Elba Island and stand out for a distinctive landscape closely linked to the island’s mining history. In this area, the sea is often very clear and the beaches differ from other parts of Elba, with a prevalence of pebbles, gravel and dark sands rich in minerals.

The best-known beach is Rio Marina Beach, located close to the village. The shoreline consists of dark sand and gravel, with seabeds that become deep quite quickly. The sea is generally clean and the setting is convenient for those staying in the village, thanks to the proximity of services, bars and seafront walks.

On the northern side of the Rio territory lies Nisporto Beach, one of the most appreciated in the area. Here the shoreline is composed of sand mixed with small pebbles, set within a wide and well-sheltered bay. The seabed is more regular compared to other beaches in Rio, making Nisporto suitable for families and for those seeking a more peaceful day by the sea.

Along the eastern coastline there are also smaller and more natural coves, characterised by pebbles and rocky seabeds, ideal for those who enjoy clear waters and snorkelling. These beaches are often less crowded and offer direct contact with an authentic environment.

Overall, the beaches of Rio represent an interesting choice for those wishing to discover a different side of Elba, characterised by clear waters, mining landscapes and quieter atmospheres, away from the island’s more tourist-oriented areas.
